Theory & Practical Test info
The Theory Test
The theory test consists of 2 parts, hazard perception & multiple choice. Both these parts are taken at the same time. You must pass both parts to get a pass. Once the theory test is passed, you are then able to apply for your practical test once you are near test standard.
Hazard Perception
During the hazard perception part of the test, you’ll watch 14 short video clips with a view from the drivers seat. Each time you spot a potential developing hazard you click the mouse. During this time, an invisible scoring window opens up which will score you out of 5. The earlier you click, the more points you will score. A score of 44 or above out of 75 must be achieved to pass this part.
Multiple Choice
The multiple choice consists of 50 questions. you will be asked questions on information in the Highway Code. A minimum score of 43 will result in a pass for this part.

The Practical Test
This is a test of your practical ability. The test usually takes around 35-45 minutes to complete. Firstly, after introductions with the examiner, you will be asked to read a registration plate from 20 metres to test your eyesight. Once in the car, the examiner will explain the test & will ask you 1 ‘tell me’ question. This question will either be inside the vehicle or under the bonnet. For a list of the ‘show me, tell me’ questions please follow the link.
You will then be asked to drive off when you’re ready. During the test you will be asked to carry out 1 reversing manoeuvre out of a possible 3; reverse park, reverse on the right, forward bay park. The examiner may also ask you to carry out an emergency/controlled stop during the test. 20 minutes of the test consists of independent driving, which may consist of following a Satellite Navigation (GPS) or following road signs. the examiner will ask you a ‘show me’ question at one point on the drive. for example; when it is safe to do so, can you please show me how to function the headlights. Once you are back to the test centre, you will receive the result of the test immediately with some constructive feedback from the examiner. The examiner knows you’re not a qualified driver so your drive doesn’t need to be perfect, you can make up to 15 small mistakes (driver faults). However a serious or dangerous fault will result in a fail.
